What is digital legacy planning?
Digital legacy planning is the process of organizing and securing your digital assets, online accounts, important documents, and personal messages so they can be passed on to loved ones after your passing. The Afterlife wraps all of that in encrypted vaults with a verified release protocol so the right items reach the right people at the right time.
How does the heartbeat system work?
You pick a rhythm — daily, weekly, or monthly. We send you a check-in via email (and WhatsApp on paid plans). One tap confirms you're here. If you miss several in a row, we escalate to your emergency contact before anything releases. Silence alone never triggers a release — a human confirmation is always required.
Is my data actually secure?
Yes. Every vault item is end-to-end encrypted before it's stored — even our own engineers can't read your content without your key. Recipients see only the items you addressed to them, not everyone else's, and only after passing is verified and they've proven their identity via a signed link.
Can I store video messages for my loved ones?
Yes — on the Pro and Unlimited plans. Videos are stored encrypted, addressed to specific recipients, and released the same way as documents and voice notes. Use cases: a birthday video for a child who hasn't been born yet, a personal goodbye, an apology, or a family story you want them to hear from you directly.
What is a duress code?
A hidden 4–6 digit PIN you set in your profile. If you're ever forced to check in against your will, entering this code instead of confirming normally will silently alert your emergency contact — the screen looks like a normal check-in to anyone watching. It's an opt-in security layer for high-risk situations.
What happens if I stop paying for my subscription?
Your vault contents stay secure. We contact you before making any changes. Free-tier users retain access to basic vault features. Paid features like WhatsApp check-ins, video storage, and higher recipient limits pause until you renew, but your existing content is never deleted.
How much does digital legacy planning cost in South Africa?
The Afterlife starts at R0/month for basic features (1 vault, 1 recipient, 1 GB, daily email check-ins). Paid plans go from R99/month (Standard) through R249/month (Pro, with video) to R499/month (Unlimited). See the pricing page for full details.
Who can I list as a recipient?
Anyone with an email address — family, executor, attorney, friend, business partner. They don't need an Afterlife account until the moment your vault releases to them, at which point they get a signed private link at their listed email and go through identity verification.
Can I edit or delete a vault later?
Yes — anytime. Your dashboard shows all vaults, all items, all recipients. Add, remove, or replace any item. Change of heart on a letter? Gone in a tap. You are always in control while you're alive.
How is passing actually verified?
Two independent gates. First, the heartbeat protocol escalates through your normal check-ins, then to your emergency contact. Second, the emergency contact can also directly report your passing via a signed link we send them. Only when both signals align do vaults enter their release window. Every step is audit-logged.
